There's two parts to this.
You have the 95 episode TV series "Rurouni Kenshin", and then the OAV series "Samurai X", which has Trust/Betrayal (a 2 DVD story) and Seisouhen (Reflections, another DVD). Trust/Betrayal take place before the Kenshin series, then comes to the TV show, and finally Seisouhen. There's also a movie, Requiem of the Ishin Shishi, that goes somewhere in there; As you can tell, I haven't seen it.
Rurouni Kenshin is a good TV series, but its very long and there's a lot of fillers. It ties in well with the Samurai X movies, but despite that, feels much weaker than the amazing S:X titles involving the same characters. I find that the RK TV series is more for building an idea of Kenshin's skills and everyone's character, in order to get to know them better for what comes next...
Seisouhen. Its the conclusion to the whole Kenshin series, and it is amazing. I cried for the first time watching an anime, at the end of Seisouhen T.T Of course I won't say what happened But I can tell you its absolutely tear gripping, especially after watching Trust, Betrayal and another 95 TV episodes. Wow >.<
Oh, and Trust and Betrayal is when Kenshin was 16 (ish), as the Battousai of the revolution. It involves heavy Shinsengumi references (w00t!) and is also a pretty emotional movie. I make new anime fans simply having them watch Samurai X Trust and Betrayal; It is an amazing movie that even anime haters will enjoy. The gore, the emotion, the love story... Its all put together brilliantly.
I reall do like Kenshin ^_^ Just too many TV episodes make it a bit lower than Evangelion on my list...
